CGPACS Director, Professor Cecelia Lynch MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the Center for Global Peace and Conflict Studies. CGPACS is a multi-disciplinary program, housed in the Social Sciences, dedicated to promoting scholarly, student, and public understanding of international peace and conflict. CGAPCS affiliated faculty (approximately 60 faculty from 7 schools across campus), guest speakers, and affiliated graduate students work on the military/ strategic, economic/ environmental, and cultural/ normative motives, processes, and consequences of both peace and conflict. At CGPACS, we recognize that each of these aspects of peace and conflict needs to be studied in isolation as well as through their interconnections. As a result, our research programs encompass intra-disciplinary as well as interdisciplinary work.

This year we are sponsoring a series of UCI Faculty Experts who speak about their research in progress or about topical matters of global peace and conflict. We also maintain a "Find an Expert" list of faculty who can be scheduled for community engagements and press interviews on a variety of topical issues and problems concerning global peace and conflict. We sponsor the annual Margolis Lecture, in honor of Julius Margolis, Professor Emeritus of Economics and one of our founding members, which brings to UCI and Southern California well-known figures who have contributed knowledge and activism to peace and conflict studies, focusing particularly on arms control issues. We organize (and co-sponsor, with other centers and departments) additional lectures by visiting scholars, officials, and activists to encourage broader discussion at UCI and in Southern California of the strategic/military, economic/environmental, and cultural/normative issues involved in global conflict and cooperation. We fund faculty seed grants to further research on issues of global peace and conflict, and also provide funding for graduate student initiatives whenever possible. Finally, we publish research talks in our working paper series.

We are grateful for all community interest and support of CGPACS. In particular, we thank the Office for Research and Graduate Studies, the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation, and UCI's Peace Gift donor for continued funding for our faculty, student, and public initiatives.

We invite you to browse through our website or search for particular information, whether it be an upcoming conference or seminar, faculty publications on issues of global peace and conflict, research group emphases, finding an expert to speak to the media or a community group, or additional resources and links to learn more about issues of global peace and conflict.

We hope you will consider participating in CGPACS!

Sincerely,
Cecelia Lynch, Director
